Local artist holds first show at A Space

COMMERCE — Janelle Stogner has been painting for 30 years, but Oct. 5 was the 78-year-old Greenville resident’s first art show.

The event, held at A Space Art Gallery in downtown Commerce, was attended by her friends and family, many of whom hail from her home state of Louisiana. Janelle’s artwork is clearly Cajun-influenced, and focuses on rustic landscapes and cosy cabins.

“Painting gives me a peace I hadn’t realized before,” she said. “It’s something I’ve wanted to do my whole life.”

Janelle paints mostly on canvas, and learned to paint after taking classes decades ago. She also used to watch famed television painter Bob Ross, whose techniques she’s copied.

“I really enjoyed him,” she said.

Janelle attempted to paint with watercolors and other mediums before discovering she enjoyed oils on canvas the most. She’s also painted on wooden and metal saws.

“I put my heart and soul into it,” she said.

The show was a result of the work of Janelle’s daughters, Celia Stogner-Dickinson and Stormy Stogner-Medina, who set up the show.

“I have to thank my wonderful girls,” she said. “They did everything for me. It just tickles me to death.”

Janelle typically spends three to four hours on a painting, which she completes in one sitting.

“Painting is so peaceful,” she said. “I raise a few windows, and just sit back and listen to nature.”

Her husband, J.W., encourages her everyday, according to Janelle. A veteran of the Korean War who served on the USS Iowa, J.W. has recently gone through some health problems that required Janelle to take care of him.

“He tells me every day he’s is proud of me,” she said. “I can’t believe people love my artwork.”

A Space is a window gallery located at 1209 Alamo Street in downtown Commerce. Individuals can enter the gallery by appointment by contacting Ashley Bryan at 325-260-8869. Janelle’s art will be displayed throughout the month of October.
