Record year for volleyball program

COMMERCE — The Commerce Volleyball program had a record year this year, having all teams go undefeated in district play and the varsity going the furthest it’s been since 1977.

“Our seventh through varsity went undefeated in district play,” Sarah Fielden, head coach of the Commerce HS Lady Tigers Volleyball Team said. “This is very promising as a program. They all got a taste for winning and I think they want to keep it.”

Fielden said the Lady Tigers high school team had an especially exciting year.

“We were district champions for district 14 2-A and were regional finalists where we lost to Brock,” she said. “We went 30-8 and lost to the state champions, so it feels better if you lose to the team that went on to win the championship.”

According to Fielden, the team’s deep run was because of the teamwork and camaraderie.

“This is good because I’ve had these girls since their freshman year,” she said. “They have progressed since they’ve been in high school, and our underclassmen stepped up and played well together.”

Fielden praised her team for the deep run in the playoffs and being able to compete against the larger schools.

“The level of play has changed so much,” she said. “It’s so faster paced. It’s nice to be playing on the same level as the larger cities. “

Fielden said she is glad to be able to work well with the junior high volleyball coaches.

“The coaching staff at the junior high is excellent,” she said. “By the time they get to high school, they know what to expect from their coaches.”

Fielden said even though her team made it far in the playoffs, she would be proud of them if it didn’t.

“I would rather have a group of kids building each other up than having a team loaded with talent but not representing the school well,” she said. “The camaraderie won’t develop if that is not there.”
