Roberts resigns as CISD superintendent

By Jay Strickland

The Commerce ISD Board accepted the resignation of Superintendent Mike Roberts after just one year on the job.

The trustees accepted the resignation, including an “exit agreement” at a special meeting Monday night. The item was discussed in a closed executive session.

The Board would still not comment on why Roberts was let go.

“I can’t discuss the details,” said Board President Willie Blow. “I don’t think it would be fair to Mr. Roberts and it wouldn’t be in the interest of the district. What we did tonight, we came to a mutual agreement with Mr. Roberts. It’s in the best interest of the district and we just want to move on.”

Roberts was placed on paid administrative leave June 23. A four-hour executive session on Roberts at a special meeting June 30 led to no action taken by the Board.

“Now we can go ahead and prepare for this coming year and search for a new superintendent and move on,” Blow said.

The Board also released no details on the exit agreement with Roberts.

“I can tell you it’s effective today (July 14),” Blow said. “It’s a voluntary resignation from Mr. Roberts. All the details are acceptable to him and the district. I think it’s a pretty good deal for the district and fair to Mr. Roberts.”

Commerce ISD will start the search for a new superintendent almost immediately.

“The process is, we try to locate a firm to help with our search,” Blow said. “Probably on next week’s agenda, we will discuss that and take any action that’s necessary.”
