Quay Throgmorton is the sole candidate who has filed so far for the position of mayor for the Commerce City Council election to be held on May 10.
Throgmorton has served on the City Council previously and has been resident of Commerce for two years.
Incumbent Place 2 Council member and Mayor Pro Tem John Sands has decided to run again for the position. Sands has lived in the city of Commerce for 69 years.
Likewise, 19-year-old Russell Lutes, a resident of Commerce for seven months, has filed for Place 4 on the Council.
“He is young and new to the Council,” said Becky Pattillo, assistant city secretary at City of Commerce.
Tim Johnson, owner of The Drunken Mule club, announced in The East Texan dated Feb. 21 that he would enter the race for the city mayor “to make some changes in the city” but has not filed for the office.
“He cannot run for the position because he has not filed for the position. We haven’t received any paperwork from him yet,” said Pattillo.
Qualified U.S. citizens can file for the position of the mayor and two other open positions — Place 2 and Place 4 respectively — until March 10 at City Hall. A candidate must be a Texas resident for one year, resident of the city for six months and at least 18 years old, according to Pattillo.
In the meantime, filling for places 4 and 5 for the Commerce Independent School District Board of Trustees is open through March 10 as well.
According to the CISD Web site, Ted Oats has filed for Place 4 and incumbent Willie Blow has filed for re-election to Place 5.
Candidates for CISD can file Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the CISD Administration Office at 604 Culver St.
Monday, March 17, is the deadline for write-in candidates.
Early voting for both the elections will begin on April 28 and runs through May 6. The normal voting hours will be 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. with extended hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on April 30 and May 1. Election day is on May 10. The extended hours will apply to election day as well. All voting will take place at City Hall.
