Sheriff’s Office receives no complaints of racial profiling in 2007

The chief deputy with the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office reported Monday that the Sheriff’s Office had no racial profiling complaints in 2007.

“There are no racial profiling complaints received this year,” Chief Deputy Robert White told the Commissioners Court, who then unanimously approved the report.

According to the Sheriff’s Office racial profiling report, in 2007, deputies performed 1,241 traffic stops with 209 resulting in searches. Most of the traffic stops — or 79 percent — involved white individuals, according to the report. About 9 percent of the stops involved Hispanic individuals and 10 percent involved African Americans.

Of those 1,241 stops, the report indicates that officers conducted 170 consent searches, with 130 of those involving white individuals; 29 involving Hispanic individuals and 10 involving African Americans.

The deputies also conducted 37 probable cause searches. Deputies made 83 arrests following the searches, the report indicates.
