Elmer Hall already serves the Commerce community as a volunteer firefighter. Now he wants to bring that volunteer spirit to the Commerce City Council.
“I just wanted to see if I could help out the city and the citizens,” Hall said.
Hall is running for the Place 2 position against Billie Biggerstaff and Chris Ellason.
He would like to see city money spent better and would like to see roads improved.
“Of course, you’re talking about spending money when you talk about fixing roads,” he said.
Hall said there were overruns on the new City Hall and police and fire complex.
“That’s already done, so I would like to eliminate stuff like that,” he said. “If we get a bid, I’d like to try to stick with that. Not start out in the hole. Of course, I know the way fuel prices have gone lately, sometimes you can’t do much about it.”
As far as fixing the roads, Hall says to include everything like sewage, drainage and engineering, it would eat up the entire $3 million bond package just to fix a few roads.
“If we do get the bond money, I’d like to see it go as far as possible,” he said.
That includes looking at some cheaper alternative ways of paving, according to Hall.
He would also like to take a hand in making sure Commerce gets a good city manager.
“Basically, the city’s running pretty decent,” Hall said. “I would like to see the taxes go down, or at least not go up. I think we should only spend money when we have to.”
Hall said he just wants to do his part to serve the community.
“I like to volunteer,” he said. “I like to help out where I can. ... I just basically want to try to help out any way I can and try to be a good steward of what the citizens give us.”
Hall was born in Sulphur Springs and moved to Commerce in 1987. He and his wife, Kathy, have two grown children and a son, Coty, who is a junior at Commerce High School. They also have one grandson. He has been a volunteer firefighter for 14 years. He works as a mechanic at Kimberly-Clark in Paris.
