The dirt will fly on May 15 at 1:30 p.m., breaking ground on the new A.C. Williams Elementary School. The public is invited to a 30 minute ceremony marking the beginning of the construction phase at 615 Culver Street.
Superintendent Mike Roberts will welcome visitors and recognize special guests along with the Commerce ISD Board of Trustees. Board President Debbie Aikin and Wyman Williams, who chaired the Citizens Facilities Committee, will bring remarks. The Facilities Committee, which successfully marketed the school bond, will be recognized.
Student representatives from the third grade classes, accompanied by school trustees, will throw the first shovels of dirt to symbolize the construction phase of the new school. Students who are third graders this year will be the first class of fifth graders at the new school which will be completed in the summer of 2009.
Julia Robinson will continue to lead the new school, accompanied by her team of teachers and staff. The school was designed with staff and teacher input by Claycomb Architects of Dallas and will be constructed by Kibler Construction.
Meeting Texas Education Agency standards, the 66,000-square-foot, one- story school features 24 standard classrooms all with natural light. Two student computer labs and state of the art media center take advantage of the latest technology. The gym and cafeteria are large enough to serve the entire student body.
Traffic problems associated with the present elementary school will be solved with the separation of bus and parent drop-off drives at the new school.
Drawings of the new school are available for public viewing in the superintendent’s office.
The new A. C. Williams Elementary School is located across from Commerce Middle School at 615 Culver St.
