All her hard work is paying off.
Texas A&M University-Commerce student Sydni Walker recently accepted a prestigious editorial internship with Southwest Airlines to handle their publications, including the company’s Spirit Magazine.
Out of the 28,000 individuals who applied this year, only 215 were selected to be interns.
Walker said being chosen for the internship, which begins Jan. 14, gave her both a sigh of relief and a rush of excitement.
“I was so excited,” she said, adding that the interview was a lengthy process of multiple phone interviews and an hour long interview in front of three separate managers at Southwest Airlines. “I was so nervous because it would take a few weeks inbetween each interview. It was a huge relief when they called.”
Walker said the combination of working for A&M-Commerce and taking classes from the college gave her the experience she needed in order to get the internship.
“I felt confident writing press releases and writing for Pride Magazine that they could throw whatever they had at me,” she said. “In the classes and working with the university I had to write for different people and adapt my writing for every editor. I just learned a lot through classes and hands on experience.”
Walker said students studying journalism need to take every advantage of opportunities to hone their writing skill that they can.
“Have a blog, write, use social media. Definitely get experience,” she said. “A lot of my fellow classmates haven’t taken advantage of writing in local papers.”
Walker said she would like to see this internship turn into a full time job working with the company because it would be a chance to travel the world and write stories for the company.
“I would love to. The interviewer said the internship is a four-month-long interview for a job,” she said. “I want to learn how this huge organization works and learn something different.”
If she was given the job, Walker said she would like to travel to New York first, and “from there, anywhere. I love going to new places and seeing new things.”
