Operation Cold Spell brings narcotics distribution to a freeze

23 arrested on drug manufacturing and distribution charges

COMMERCE — Almost two dozen individuals were arrested yesterday in Commerce after the Commerce Police Department, along with Texas A&M and Sulphur Springs Police Departments and Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office conducted busts after a four-month-long investigation into drug rings in the city.

This is the second time in as many weeks the department has made multiple arrests for drug trafficking and manufacturing.

“It came to a head today and we conducted a bust out where we have officers conduct warrants,” CPD Chief Kerry Crews said, adding the department sent seven separate teams of at least four officers, totaling 35 officers, with each team out during the code named Operation Cold Spell.

23 of the 28 suspects have been apprehended, according to Crews.

Crews said he expects to have the rest in a reasonable amount of time.

“We should be able to get those (the other five) in a few days or so,” he said, adding this is not the only drug ring that is suspected in Commerce. “We will continue the investigation.”

Commerce PD did most of the investigative work, but since some of the individuals arrested were known to use firearms, Crews said for extra precaution he was able to get assistance from the multiple law enforcement agencies, including Child Protective Services, who were able to remove four children, ranging from ages 2 through 7-years-old from the different locations.

The department also took in four other individuals who were found at the location during the bust, and have been booked on local warrants.

Some of the charges include manufacture of a controlled substance, delivery of a controlled substance, and one count of a firearms smuggling misdemeanor.

Below is a list of persons that have been arrested and have been or will be transported to Hunt County shortly.
