After months of construction, Monroe Street from Live Oak to Greenville Street has been completed. The project was on budget, according to Commerce City Manager Marc Clayton, but about one month behind schedule.
The delay won’t affect the city’s contract with Quality Excavation, however, as the company is contracted to complete all of the road projects, save for the final north end of Monroe. The bid for that section, which is being paid for by a Texas Water Development Board grant, will have to be approved by the TWDB.
“I’m not happy with the looks of the road,” Clayton said, referring to seams in the top layer. “While that doesn’t affect the quality of the road, the company will come out again in the spring when it gets warm again and use a clear coat in the seams.”
Clayton said he was pleased with the way Lee Street turned out.
“I think that’s a great example of how these roads can look,” he said.
Quality Excavation still has some cleanup work to do along Monroe. Once they’ve finished, they will begin construction on phase two of the construction project: Monroe Street from Greenville to Walnut and Stonewall from Bryan to Monroe. Both projects will begin simultaneously, Clayton said.
“They already done a lot of work on the infrastructure beneath Stonewall, so that project should move quickly,” he said.
The final phase of the project will feature reconstruction on West Neal from Culver to Cooper; Washington from Culver to Maple; and Monroe from Live Oak to Bonham.
The project began with Harlow Road in 2012, and will cost a total of $4.8 million. Texas A&M University-Commerce and the Texas Water Development Board each contributed roughly $1 million to the project. The rest of the money was approved by Commerce voters in a bond election.
