Local church allies with service organization

COMMERCE — One out of every three people in Commerce lives below the poverty line.

According the the United States Census Bureau, 32 percent of Commerce’s population live below the poverty line, making it almost twice Hunt County’s 18 percent.

Commerce Community Church (C3), a local church that meets inside the Rayburn Student Center, is partnering with the Commerce Alliance for Ministry to help meet the basic needs of the city and Hunt County.

C3 will host its third annual community garage sale on March 23, at the parking lot of the church’s office building on 2104 Monroe Street. The event will begin at 8 a.m. and will run until the church is out of items to sell.

The Commerce Alliance for Ministry is a conglomerate of churches in Commerce that partner together to meet the needs of the underprivileged in the community. The ministry distributes funds through local city and county service organizations, including Hunt County Shared Ministries (FISH).

According to C3 Pastor David Ferguson, his church is donating the funds to the ministry because he believes he is following what the Bible teaches about serving, specifically Jeremiah 29:7.

“Scriptures teach that the churches should seek the welfare of the city,” he said, adding that his church is looking to follow that standard.

Donations can be made by calling the church’s office at 903.513.2699, or emailing Pastordavid@c3.org.
