More training available soon for Hunt County Firefighters in Commerce

COMMERCE — Firefighters in Hunt County may have a new facility to train in next year.

The Commerce City Council voted on Dec. 17 to approve a lease agreement with the Hunt County Firefighters Association for the old Norris Community Fire Station in north Commerce.

The new facility would be used to train firefighters in various techniques from brush fires to house fires.

According to Jim Davenport, president of the HCFA, the facility meets the needs of what the association was looking for.

“We have been searching for years for a facility to train,” he said. “We’ve got the best place in the city for it.”

Davenport said firefighters will come from all over the county and surrounding areas on weekends to train at the station.

Also in the plans of the station is to open it up in conjunction with Hunt Regional Healthcare for citizens to come and get their CPR certification courses.

According to the lease agreement with Commerce, there is no fee charged for the HCFA to use the facility, the association needs to keep the facility in good working order.
