Attendance, security discussed during CISD meeting

COMMERCE — Enrollment at Commerce Independent School District continues to fluctuate as the district tries to help increase overall enrollment at the schools.

“We are up 39 students from last year, but down 68 from last September,” Blake Cooper, superintendent for CISD said during the Sept. 16 CISD board meeting. Cooper added that the district receives $5,000 in funding for each student. “That’s a lot of money.”

With CISD being a small district, Cooper said they cannot afford to have big dips in enrollment.

“We have got to watch that this year because there is not a lot of cushion in the budget.”

Cooper said the district is working on ways to attract families to bring their children to Commerce ISD. One of which included a promotional video the district posted online during the summer.

“We are trying to be creative to see what we can do,” he said.

An increase in security at all schools is also expected to happen shortly.

Cooper said CISD Director of Technology Al Shipp is working on new visitor policies for the schools.

“We’ve got another company visiting with Al for a buzzer entry system,” he said.
