One lot in Commerce was sold this week for a truly reduced price.
The Hunt County Commissioners Court Tuesday approved the sale of a parcel in the 1100 block of Blackburn Street in east Commerce for $1.
Paul Arnold with the Hunt County Tax Office explained the property has been included in the county’s tax foreclosure inventory since June 2012 and that the purchaser had already received the OK from the city.
“She went to the Commerce City Council for approval, then she came to us,” Arnold said, indicating it was the reverse of the process which was usually followed.
Records indicate there is a 1,152 square foot, single family home, built in 1975 on the lot. Property taxes have not been paid for at least seven years.
Despite the bargain basement selling price, Arnold said it was unlikely there would be many other offers made for the property.
“A lot of those properties have no worth anyway, as they are still recovering from the contamination,” Arnold said, referring to the arsenic contamination from the former Hi-Yield/VPG plant nearby, which was reported in the surrounding neighborhood in the 1990s.
