Boxcars derail in Commerce

'someone caused some mischief' says CPD Chief

COMMERCE —

The Commerce Police Department is currently investigating a train derailment which occurred June 1 in Commerce.

According to CPD Chief Kerry Crews, four boxcars were unhinged from a train behind the former Covidien building and came off the tracks between Knight and Sycamore Streets.

“From what I can determine, apparently someone unhooked four boxcars from the rest of the train,” he said. “They rolled eastbound along the tracks.”

Crews said fortunately there was a safety device that intentionally derails wayward boxcars from continuing to roll down the tracks.

The situation could have been worse, but whoever did it didn’t fully succeed in causing extensive disruption to the rail.

“Someone did some mischief,” he said. “And they accomplished that to a certain extent.”
