Hospital provides grant for ‘Happy Lungs’ program

Hunt Regional Healthcare provides grant for museum program

COMMERCE — Hunt Regional Healthcare recently announced a grant to fund “Healthy, Happy Lungs” at the Northeast Texas Children’s Museum. The grant is part of the Tobacco Settlement Distribution funds for 2014.

Purchase of a classroom set of oximeters allowed measurement of oxygen levels and heart rate. The grant also provided for an instructor to work with the students.

During a field trip, kindergarten and second graders used the oximeters. Nearly 2,000 students participated in the program at the Children’s Museum this last semester. The new program encourages young children to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It builds on classroom experiences.

D’Ann Frank instructed kindergarten children. They used the oximeters to see the effect of exercise on their oxygen level and heart rate.

“The children loved using the oximeters,” Frank said. “Students could see their heart rates and oxygen levels as they rested. Then students observed changes following a few minutes of exercise.”

A goal of the exercise was to infer the effect of exercise on their bodies. The lesson also included the hazards of smoking and the benefits of good health.

“For some time we have wanted to have oximeters so that children could measure their own oxygen levels and heart rates,” Executive Director Sharline Freeman said. “We were excited to receive the grant from Hunt Regional Healthcare. I makes a quality lesson on good health possible for the children of Hunt County.”

Northeast Texas Children’s Museum includes a field trip curriculum for each grade level. Other lessons for 2014 included Bubble Magic, Mystery of Magnets, Life on the Farm, Safety with Gas, and Water Friction. The Northeast Texas Children’s Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For additional information, call the museum at 903-886-6055.
