Commerce ISD comes in FIRST

COMMERCE — Commerce Independent School District received a ranking of superior on the state’s financial accountability system.

The 83rd Legislative session determined that a district’s Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST) rating will now be added to its accountability, which determines how much a school is funded through the state.

A superior rating is the highest award that a district can receive.

Blake Cooper, superintendent of CISD, said thanks in large part goes to the district’s director of finance John Walker.

“Thank you to John and our staff,” he said. “John Walker deserves a reward.”

Cooper said he is glad to see CISD’s finances beginning to get back where they were a few years ago.

“It’s good to get back where we need to be,” he said. “That’s where we are and that’s where we’re staying.”

Walker said he wouldn’t have been able to do it without the board’s help and help from his staff.

According to Walker, he was very fortunate to have been able to balance the budget with the state’s cutbacks.

“We’ve been battling to get back on track,” he said. “It feels good.”

Walker said he is not going to rest on his laurels yet, because there is a lot more work to do.

“You can’t rest,” he said. “You’ve got to keep going.”
