Downtown splash park a possibility in city's future

Commerce residents may have a new way to cool off later this year.

The Commerce City Council is expected to discuss the hearing and consideration authorizing Commerce City Manager Marc Clayton to move forward with the construction and expenditure of funds for a splash park in downtown Commerce during tomorrow’s meeting at 6p.m.

According to Clayton, he was asked to research into what it would cost and what it would look like to install a splash park in the vacant lot across from Commerce City Hall.

A portion of the site was recently renovated Sherry Johnson, Commerce tourism/event coordinator, spearheaded a project to have a mural painted on a wall of the vacant lot.

After viewing the preliminary drawings, Clayton said a splash park downtown would help draw people to Commerce and make the downtown area more hospitable to patrons.

“I think a small splash park with a few tables and grills would be great downtown,” he said.

The only hindrance is cost.

Clayton has not received an official figure yet, but said a splash park would have to come at a fairly high price.

“Those things don’t come cheap though,” he said, adding he should receive the official numbers in time for the meeting.

Clayton said although the wording of the discussion of the splash park leaves it open for the council to possibly take action on it, he expects the council will want to discuss the item further before approving any expenditures during the meeting.

“They usually want to think about it,” he said.

But with the quick turnaround on construction of splash parks in general, Clayton said if approved soon, the park could be completed in time for the 2014 Bois d’Arc Bash on Sept. 26.
