Potential no-kill Commerce shelter

COMMERCE — Members of the Commerce Humane Association want a few more details on how the No Kill Hunt County group would move forward in turning the Commerce Animal Shelter into a no-kill shelter.

“We have a few concerns that we think needs to be addressed,” Jodie McIntire, with the Commerce Humane Association, said.

McIntire said while she is not against no-kill shelters, she helps run the Frank Barchard Memorial Shelter — a no-kill shelter in Wolfe City — she wants a few concerns of hers answered before moving forward.

“Liability needs to be addressed,” she said. “They need up-to-date vaccines and rabies shots.”

Monette Douglas, with NKHC, is working with the city for extended hours for the animal shelter, located on 1203 Oneal Street, on Saturdays from 1-4 p.m. beginning in March.

Douglas said it will be run through volunteers, who will help clean the facility, train and groom the pets, and help with vaccinations in order to keep the animals in better health to encourage adoption.

McIntire said setting up and maintaining a no-kill shelter takes a lot of planning before being implemented.

“This needs to be fine-tuned in order to move forward,” she said, adding she would be willing to help train the volunteers.” I’ve got 40 years in this, I’d love to help train.”

With the problem Commerce has about stray cats and dogs, McIntire said another need should be met in the city.

“If we just implemented spay and neuter, we can break that cycle of euthanasia,” she said.

McIntire said she is glad that members of the No Kill Hunt County are taking initiative for animals in Commerce.

“I applaud these ladies for what they are doing,” she said. “Anything we can do to reduce our euthanasia rate, I’m for.”
