Building houses for worthy residents

COMMERCE — Three Commerce families received keys to their new houses, thanks to a federal HOME grant the city is a part of.

Commerce has a contract with Resource Management & Consulting Company, based in Paris. The grant company seeks out grants the city is eligible for, and helps to write up the paperwork.

Charles Edwards, owner and consultant for the company, said he has had a long and rich history with not only the city council, but he and his wife also graduated from Texas A&M University-Commerce.

Edwards said it makes helping out residents of his former town that much more memorable to him.

“It’s a great feeling that you’re able to make a great impact around the region,” he said.

According to Edwards, the grant not only helps the new homeowner, since the construction company purchases supplies in Commerce, and the city will add the new homes to its tax base, it is a multi-faceted benefit.

“At the end of the process it’s very satisfying to know that you’re not only helping the resident but also the city,” he said.

Since the application process takes a few months, Edwards said he is able to build a working relationship with the applicants that enriches the experience.

“To do the final walkthrough on the house and see the joy on their face,” he said. “It’s a visual reward.”

Edwards said he takes applications year round.
