University police step up enforcement at Cold War event

COMMERCE — The University Police Department took an increase in noise complaints and alcohol related arrests last week, due to the Zeta Tau chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.’s Cold War step show event on March 23 and 24 at the Texas A&M University-Commerce Field House.

According to Lt. Jason Bone, crime information officer for UPD, the Cold War brings in many responsible people looking for a good time, but also brings in some revellers who don’t obey the law.

“It’s nothing to walk through a parking lot and see beer bottle after beer bottle in the parking lot,” he said.

In particular, a UPD officer was patrolling parking lot outside the Field House, when the officer heard what thought to be some type of liquid hitting the ground.

According to the incident note, the officer noticed a black female leaning out of a vehicle vomitting on the ground.

The female, who was subsequently arrested for consumption of alcohol by a minor, is now identified as Tiaona Van Buren, although she gave two false names; Chantel Vanburn to the officer on the scene, then she identified herself as Chantel Nora to a member of the Commerce Police Department, where she was taken in for holding before being transported to the Hunt County Criminal Justice Center.

Officers also gave another citation for an alcohol violation and assisted the events security staff when a fight broke loose that night inside the event.
