A pair of Lions have been recognized by the Lone Star Conference at the annual LSC Basketball Championship banquet, held Tuesday evening in Allen. Senior forward Andrew Davis has been named the conference’s Academic Player of the Year for the second time while senior forward Preston Whitley was named an honorable mention All-Lone Star Conference selection.
Davis solidified as one of the top players in the LSC both on the court and in the classroom, repeating as the LSC’s Academic Player of the Year after capturing the honor in 2011-12. A first team Capital One Academic All-American, Davis is having the best season of his A&M-Commerce career, setting personal bests in points (253) and rebounds. He ranks among the LSC leaders in a handful of categories, including sitting second in defensive rebounds per game (5.3), fourth in field goal percentage (54.2%) and fifth in rebounds per game (7.1).
Whitley earns the second All-LSC honor of his career after being named the conference’s Freshman of the Year in 2008-09. Whitley leads A&M-Commerce in scoring, averaging 13.7 points per game, which ranks ninth in the LSC. He is also among the conference leaders in free throw percentage, sitting tied for eighth after shooting 76.5 percent from the line. Whitley notched his 1,000th point earlier this season and has scored 1,111 points in 101 career games, averaging 11.0 points for his A&M-Commerce career.
The honor for the duo marks the 19th-straight season at least one Lion has appeared among the All-LSC squad. Under head coach Sam Walker, 33 A&M-Commerce hoopsters have now been named to the all-conference team as Davis becomes just the second multi-year Academic Player of the Year recipient.
Davis, Whitley and the rest of the Lions now set their sights on the Lone Star Conference quarterfinals where they will take on a familiar foe. A&M-Commerce battles top-seeded Midwestern State for the third-straight postseason, and ninth time in the past three seasons, tipping off today 8:30 p.m. at the Allen Event Center.Full coverage of the Lions’ LSC tournament appearance is available at LionAthletics.com
