Commerce Public Library to host Spring Open House

The Commerce Journal

COMMERCE — The Commerce Public Library wishes to invite you to our Spring Open House on Sunday, April 21 from 2 to 4 p.m..

The celebration will begin with the annual “Brick Ceremony” which honors local artists and authors in Authors Park next door to the library. This year two artists – Thomas Seawell and Jerry Dodd – and one author – John Hanners – will receive bricks engraved with their names in recognition of their creative achievements. Bricks engraved with their names will also be set into the park walkway where they will join a growing list of other distinguished members of our community.  Hunt County Commissioner Jim Latham says they are “sacred bricks” because they are from the original 1922 Main Street pavement.

Jenny Wingfield, noted novelist and screenplay author will also be in attendance at the open house.  She will be selling and signing her novel, The Homecoming of Samuel Lake. Wingfield’s writing credits include the screenplay for the film “The Man in the Moon” starring Sam Waterston and Rees Witherspoon.

Following the ceremony in the park, all are invited to join library staff and volunteers inside for refreshments and good company. Library staff are eager to share some of their new services and materials with area citizens. These include a bank of computer monitors purchased in the past year for public Internet access and an exciting new e-book checkout service which allows library patrons to load audio and electronic books onto a variety of digital devices ranging from iPads to Kindle readers to smart phones and beyond.

The Open House is the kick-off for the spring Friends of the Commerce Public Library membership drive.  We hope everyone will join the Friends and help keep the library operating in the aftermath of a severe budget cut from the city.
