New traffic, tow truck ordinances discussed during council meeting

COMMERCE — Some days, you just can’t get out of your driveway.

The Commerce City Council passed a new traffic control ordinance during its June 18 meeting that would prohibit parking along the curb on the 2100 block of Hickory Street.

According to Commerce Police Chief Kerry Crews, one of the families along that stretch has problems pulling out of their driveway, due to cars parking a long the curb adjacent to their house.

“The family has issues coming in and out of the driveway,” he said. “The family also has a member who requires medical transport at times.”

The issue stems from residents who live in the Durham Public Housing homes, who park along the west side of the curb, leaving little room for the family to pull out of the drive.

Crews said each of the Durham Homes has parking spots available on Durham Street.

“Each one of the homes has parking spots availiable,” he said. “There is plenty of room for them to park without blocking the driveway.”

The council also gave a first reading on a tow truck ordinance for the city.

The new ordinance would amend the old ordinance, which has not been altered since 2004.

Crews said there are a few things he would like to amend to the current one, including adding a requirement that a tow truck company has to have a heavy duty wrecker.

The ordinance would also give the chief of police the ability to remove a tow truck company from the city’s list if it violates the terms of agreement.
