New driveway ordinance for Commerce residents

COMMERCE — In an effort to make Commerce more presentable, a new ordinance will prohibit residents from parking in their front lawns.

The Commerce City Council held the first reading regulating residential parking during its July 16 meeting.

According to Steve Wilson director of community development for Commerce, this ordinance will require residents to upgrade their driveway to standards.

“If a new house is constructed and a new driveway goes in, this ordinance will require a concrete drive or a brick paver or something of that quality,” he said. “Existing ones will have to at least put in a gravel drive with some type of border to hold the gravel.”

Residents will also be responsible for the upkeep of the gravel in not allowing weeds to grow up in the driveway.

Wilson said only a certain percentage of the yard can be gravelled.

“They can’t say ‘well the whole front yard is my driveway,’” he said.

The council will hear the second and final reading of the proposed ordinance during the next city council meeting.
