COMMERCE — The Commerce City Council announced a proclamation making Oct. 7-13 Texas Funeral Director’s Week and received an end of the year fiscal report in a brief meeting Tuesday night.

According to Commerce Finance Director Warren Jamieson, the city’s general fund expenses reached 100 percent of those budgeted and the city received 15 percent more in revenues then they budgeted for the last fiscal year. Property and sales tax revenue exceeded the budgeted amount, and the most recent fiscal year began on a good note as well, Jamieson said. In September, the city received more than $89,000 in sales taxes, one of the best months in Commerce history.

Barbara Lenington, president of the Commerce Parks Foundation, presented the city council with a flyer promoting their upcoming “Drive 4 UR Community” event on Nov. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Commerce City Park. The Foundation is partnering with Commerce Auto Group and the Ford Motor Company to raise funds for the Commerce Skatepark. The Ford Motor Company will donate $20 every time an individual test-drives a new Ford at the Commerce Auto Group, up to $6,000.

The event will feature live music, a step show featuring Phi Beta Sigma, Kappa Alpha Psi and Alpha Phi Alpha, improv comedy, games, food, prize drawings and goodie bags for kids. The foundation will also be collecting canned and non-perishable food items for local food banks. Samantha Grace from the Mass Media, Communications and Theatre Department of Texas A&M University-Commerce announced that the department partnered with Commerce Chevrolet to hold a canned food drive that will end Nov. 2. The drop-off location for the drive is the lobby of Commerce Chevrolet. On Oct. 19, the department will be hosting a canned food car wash in the parking lot of Brookshires where individuals can pay for their car wash by donating canned food items.
