New midfield logo makes waves

COMMERCE — That's one big logo.

The new Texas A&M University-Commerce logo was unveiled today as workers continued the installation of turf in Memorial Stadium. The golden lion stretches 50 yards, and is rumored to be the largest midfield logo in the nation.

Photos of the field quickly made the rounds on social media and popped up on national news outlets like CBS Sports and Yahoo! Work on the new field and track began in late May and will be ready for the Lions season opener against Sul Ross State on Sept. 7.

In an interview conducted in February, A&M-Commerce Athletic Director Ryan Ivey said the installation will cost approximately $75,000. The new turf was initially going to be blue, but A&M-Commerce could not secure rights to use the blue field.

Initial construction on Memorial Stadium finished in 1950. A new field and track were installed most recently in 2006.
