John Kaulfus has assumed the position of Assistant Vice President and Dean of Campus Life and Student Development at Texas A&M University-Commerce.
In his new role, Kaulfus is responsible for the Rayburn Student Center; Residential Living and Learning; the Morris Recreation Center; the Children’s Learning Center; the Counseling Center; Judicial Affairs; Student Health Services; Leadership, Engagement and Development; Student Activities; and Greek Life. Kaulfus also serves as co-advisor for the Student Government Association.
“It is a tremendous honor to serve as Assistant Vice President and Dean of Campus Life and Student Development,” said Kaulfus. “I have enjoyed working with the exceptional staff and faculty at Texas A&M University-Commerce as we collaborate to create exceptional experiences for our students, both inside and outside the classroom. The students we educate and inspire today are the future leaders of Texas, the United States, and the global community.”
Kaulfus has 24 years of higher education experience and currently serves as president-elect of the Texas Association of College and University Student Personnel Administrators (TACUSPA), and will become president of the association for the 2013-2014 year.
“TACUSPA’s mission is to provide professional development for student affairs professionals at all levels and to ensure that the needs of our students in Texas are given the highest priority,” said Kaulfus. “Being part of the leadership of TACUSPA will allow our voice to be heard with legislators and other key decision makers in Texas.”
Kaulfus holds a bachelor’s degree in social work and counseling and a master’s degree in higher education administration from the University of Texas at Austin. He is currently working on his doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Before coming to A&M-Commerce, he worked as the Associate Dean of Students at UTSA. During his tenure at UTSA, he served as one of the faculty-staff chairs for the “We are UTSA” capital campaign; he chaired the UTSA Football Game Day Committee; and he served as the interim director of housing and residence life.
Kaulfus is a native of Seguin, Texas. His wife Janis is currently a professor of environmental science and engineering at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Brian Nichols formerly served as Dean of Campus Life and Student Development at A&M-Commerce until the summer of 2012.
