Basketball squad continues winning streak

COMMERCE — The Commerce High School boys’ basketball team increased their winning streak to four games in a row with victories over Lone Oak on Feb. 1 and Como-Pickton on Feb. 5.

The Tigers defeated the Buffaloes 44-39, thanks to 12 points from senior Kavrin Massey. Freshman Trey Smith also recorded double-digit scoring numbers with 10. Seniors Buck Wilson and D’Lance Sharp added eight points a piece for the Tigers, who were outscored 10-24 in the first half, but rebounded with a 34-17 second half effort. Four days later, Commerce defeated the Eagles 58-40 on the strength of Massey’s 23 points. Sharp contributed eight points and Wilson added seven. The Tigers outscored Como-Pickton in every quarter of their victory. The wins bring the Tigers to 15-13 overall and 8-4 in district play. The Tigers are currently tied for second place in their district behind Edgewood (9-3). The top three teams from the district will make the playoffs.

“My players are certainly aware that they put themselves in a position to where, if they win the next two games, they’ll get in the playoffs,” Head Coach Kirby Jackson said. “All year long, we’ve taken things one game at a time, and right now we’re playing our best basketball. That’s what you want to do; play your best basketball in the second half of district play.”

They have two games left in the regular season against Winnsboro (Feb. 8) and Grand Saline (Feb. 12) as they fight for a playoff spot.

“Those games are definitely going to be a challenge,” Jackson said. “Our district, from top to bottom, is one of the most competitive districts in the state. We feel confident that we can win the next two games, get into the playoffs, and hopefully make some noise.”
