Verda Hogue

Verda Beatrice Anglin Hogue, 94, of Commerce died July 14, 2008, at Oak Manor Nursing Home. Funeral services were at 11 a.m., July 18, in the First Presbyterian Church in Commerce with Dr. John Purcell officiating. Burial followed in Rosemound Cemetery under the direction of Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home.

Daughter of John Thadeus and Martha Elizabeth Gibson Anglin, she was born Sept. 1, 1913, in Campbell. On March 15, 1934, she was married to Murrel Edward Hogue Sr. in Hugo, Okla.

Until her health declined, Mrs. Hogue was active in church and community affairs. As a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church for more than 70 years, she served as an elder, Sunday school superintendent and teacher, vacation Bible school director and teacher, youth fellowship leader and Women’s Circle leader.

Throughout her many years in Commerce she served in various capacities on numerous school and civic organizations. She particularly enjoyed serving as chapter advisor for Gamma Phi Beta Sorority at ETSU and her activities with the Woman’s Culture Club, including spearheading the beautification project at Rosemound Cemetery and serving as president of the club.

An avid reader, gardener and bridge player, Verda’s favorite pastime was serving and entertaining family and friends, particularly her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who loved her deeply and were greatly impacted by her Christian role model. In her later years, wishing to encourage the family to remain close and to follow the Christian lifestyle, she stated, “Having children and grandchildren was the grandest part of my and Murrel’s life. Be together and ask God to direct you. Remember to be polite and grateful.”

Verda was an exemplary southern Christian lady. Many have commented on her graciousness, her servant heart and her sweet and generous spirit. Her caregivers noted that, even during her last days she never failed to express her gratitude and appreciation to them.

The family is extremely grateful to her caregivers throughout her later years, particularly to her devoted granddaughter and the “family angel,” Laura Sparks and her family. Also greatly appreciated are Dr. Rick Selvaggi and the hardworking dedicated staff at Oak Manor Nursing Home.

Survivors include children Murrel Edward Hogue Jr. of Commerce; Dr. Genevieve Brown and husband Gordon of Huntsville and Verda Kathleen Turner and husband Donald of Arlington; grandchildren Laura Sparks and husband Steve of Commerce, John Thomas Mandina of Midlothian, Kerry Curry and husband Terry of Arlington, Kristen Hurley and husband Edward of Fayetteville, Ark., and Donald “Deke” Turner of Arlington; great-grandchildren Casey Sparks, Dylan Spraks and C.J. Sparks of Commerce, Kaitlyn Ingram of Arlington, Turner Hurley, Harrison Hurley and Samuel Hurley of Fayetteville, Ark.; one sister, Martha Anglin Snyder of San Angelo; three brothers, Milbern Anglin of Greenville, Roma Anglin of Austin and Newt Anglin of Sulphur Springs; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers, Travis Anglin and John Morris Anglin; and three sisters, Neva Barnett, Ruby Leigh Donavon and Evelyn Eddins Farrow.

Pallbearers were Gordon Brown, Edward Hurley, John Mandina, Stephen Sparks, Deke Turner and Don Turner.

Carl Brown Sr.

COMMERCE — Carl Odell Brown Sr. died July 17, 2008, following a short illness.

Born July 9, 1918, in Brookston. He grew up in Roxton and lived there until December 1941 when he enlisted in the Army as a commissioned officer with the rank of second lieutenant. He was stationed in Palm Beach, Fla. Mr. Brown retired from the Army Reserves in 1978 as a lieutenant colonel.

In 1960 he and his wife, Billie Jay Jernigin Brown, moved to Commerce where he was employed with Ling-Timco-Vought, Inc. in Greenville until 1971. In 1966 Carl received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from East Texas State University. Then in 1971, Carl was employed with the Commerce Journal, a Harte-Hanks Publishing Company, as advertising manager. He retired from this position in 1981.

Carl enjoyed the community that is Commerce. He was a member and deacon of the First Christian Church in Commerce. He loved the church family and served Christ faithfully. Carl was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow in he Commerce Rotary Club, an honor he valued highly. He had been an active member in the club since 1971. These activities filled and nurtured his life.

Surviving are his children, Carl O. Brown Jr. of Commerce, William “Bill” Jernigin Brown of Seattle, Wash., Betty Jay Brown Foley of Garland and Kerry Layne Brown of Longview; five grandsons, Kevin Brown of Sarasota, Fla., Kyle Brown of San Diego, Calif., Adam Foley of Lubbock, Christopher Brown of McKinney and Nicholas Brown of Seattle, Wash.; and two granddaughters, Jessica Foley and Allison Foley of Lubbock.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the First Christian Church, Commerce, with the Rev. John Carrier officiating under the direction of Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home in Commerce.

Gerald McKay

WOLFE CITY — Gerald Dean McKay of Commerce died July 17, 2008, in Briarcliff Health Center in Greenville following an illness lasting several months. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Saturday in the First Baptist Church in Wolfe City with Rev. Kerry Meador officiating. Burial followed in Mount Carmel Cemetery under the direction of R.W. Owens & Son Funeral Home of Wolfe City.

Born Feb. 14, 1926, in Jacobia, he was the son of Charlie T. and Eula Woodruff McKay. He married LaVerne Smith in Savoy on May 27, 1947. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. McKay worked with the U.S. Postal Service in Commerce for 27 years. He was a member of Aberfoyle Baptist Church in Aberfoyle.

Survivors are his wife of Commerce; one son, Ray Dean McKay and wife Teresia of Commerce; two daughters, Marqueta Poteet and husband Randy of Nevada, Texas, and Anna Beth Arnold and husband Jackie of Commerce; five grandchildren, Mardi Poteet Johnson, Rowdy Poteet, Kelly McKay, Kortney McKay and Kalum McKay; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Penney McKay of West Tawakoni; several nieces and nephews and a number of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; one grandson, Barry Arnold; and one sister.

Pallbearers were grandchildren Rowdy Poteet, Mardi Poteet Johnson, Kalum McKay, Kortney McKay, Kelly McKay and nephews Tim McKay and Joel McKay. Honorary pallbearer was Barry Arnold.

FRANCES KING

Frances Maureen King, 81, of Commerce died the morning of July 18, 2008, at Greenville Health & Rehab. A graveside service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Memoryland Memorial Park under the direction of Coker-Mathews Funeral Home, Greenville.

Daughter of Wiley and Opal Pitts Richardson, she was born Dec. 3, 1926, in Quinlan. Mrs. King was a veterinarian tech, homemaker and a farmer. She was a Baptist.

Surviving are a grandson and wife, Thomas and Bethel Beck of Commerce; one granddaughter, Nicole Beck of Las Vegas, Nev.; sister Anne Montgomery of Commerce and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Thomas Keith King; and a daughter, Donna Gail King.

Alta Gorman-Martin

Alta Mae Gorman-Martin, 82, of Commerce, formerly of Troup, died July 19, 2008. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Church of Christ in Troup. Burial will follow in PIne Crest Cemetery.

Visitation is from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Daughter of Brouder and Nanny Logan Baird, she was born July 2, 1926, in Atlanta, Texas, the 11th of 13 children. Mrs. Martin was a homemaker. She loved her famly and enjoyed family reunions and being with with her brothers and sisters. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing and crocheting.

Surviving are children Robert Gorman and wife Gail of Dallas and Glenda Speights and husband Sam of Garland; two stepchildren, Tony Martin and wife Joyce of Terrell and Tim Martin and wife Lori of Grand Prairie; grandchildren Kimberly Lyons, Stefan Gorman, Shanon Speights, Laurie Arnold and Sarah Alford; stepgrandchildren Stephen Martin, Fawna Melendez, Devin McClelland, Stephanie Kabetzke, Kari Martin and Rick Cushing; 20 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters, Marguerite Thompson of Atlanta, Texas, and Jane Eastman of New Braunfels; and two brothers, Edgar Baird of Atlanta, Texas, and Billy Baird of Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Master Sgt. George Gorman; her second husband, James Martin; eight brothers and her parents.

Pallbearers will be Chris Arnold, Cameron Alford, Joshua Speights, Chris Speights, Skyler Speights and Justin Lyons. Cecil Martin, Justin Frye, Clay Lyons and Stefan Gorman will serve as honorary pallbearers.
