Dr. John Zimmerman
Dr. John R. Zimmerman of Commerce died Sept. 8, 2008, in Plano. Services will be held in Commerce at 11 a.m. today at the First Baptist Church with a visitation one hour prior to the service.
A visitation is scheduled from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Zeiner Funeral Home and a graveside service on Saturday in Marion, Kan.
Dr. Zimmerman was born Sept. 11, 1920, in Eureka (Greenwood County), Kan., and was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Lenore Stenzel Zimmerman.
He is survived by their children, John Preston Zimmerman and his wife Mable of Wylie, Kathryn Annette Zimmerman of Ellensburg, Wash., and Tamara (Lea) Zimmerman Wilburn and husband Matt of Frisco; four grandchildren, Kristina Zimmerman Cruse, Piper Wilburn, Maddi Wilburn, John Wilburn, and by his sister-in-law Helen Chill of Marion, Kan.
Dr. Zimmerman began his training in physics and mathematics by earning an A.B. at Kansas State Teacher’s College in Emporia where he also met Lenore Stenzel. He continued his study in physics at Oklahoma University and the University of Illinois before going on to complete his Ph.D. at Ohio State University. His principal productive experiences in education and research include industrial, academic, and government employment with the Naval Research Laboratory, the University of Colorado, Mobil Oil Research and Development Corporation, Southern Illinois University, and East Texas State University.
Dr. Zimmerman was a leader in the development of technical inter-disciplinary programs within academia including molecular science and engineering biophysics programs. His many honors include being acknowledged in American Men and Women in Science, three elections to Who’s Who in America, and receiving Emporia State University’s and the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Dr. Zimmerman leaves a legacy of appreciative and learned researchers, academics, and individuals.

Daniel Underwood
SULPHUR SPRINGS — Funeral services for Daniel Ray Underwood, 33, of Sulphur Springs were held at 2 p.m., Sept. 7, in the West Oaks Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Kenneth Ishmael officiating. Burial followed at Brashear Cemetery with Brad Harmon, Chris “Tiny” Harmon, Donny Massey, Ed Camp, Jackie VanHolten and Junior Underwood serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Jason Tully and Brandon Moore.
Daniel died Sept. 4, 2008, at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital.
Daniel was born July 10, 1975, in Dallas, son of Danny and Donna Allen Underwood. He worked for Hydro Aluminum for six years.
Survivors include his parents of Cumby; three sons, Damien Hunter Skeen, Zane Riley Underwood and Jonathan VanHolten, all of Hopkins County; a brother, Kevin Ray Underwood and wife Amy of Tennessee; sister Staci Nicole Underwood; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
