Obituaries for Oct. 2, 2008

Daniel Blackburn

MORROW, Ga. — Daniel Lester “D.L.” Blackburn of Forest Park, Ga., died Sept. 20, 2008. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Sept. 24, at Jones Memorial United Methodist Church. Interment followed in Forest Hills Memorial Garden.

D.L. was a well loved Christian husband, father, grandfather and brother who was reared in Texas. He loved the outdoors where he spent much of his life with his sons and hunting dogs. He also traveled throughout America with his wife, Ina L. Blackburn. D.L. took his grandkids camping and taught them to fish and swim. He enjoyed listening to music played by his family. D.L. served his country in World War II as a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy. He was active in the Kiwanis Club and Jones Memorial Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife; daughter Emily Blackburn Gilstrap of Easley, S.C.; sons Michael Ray Blackburn of Jonesboro and Daniel Lester Blackburn of Lake City; sisters Euple Walker, Margaret Floyd and Ahtrell Dalton, all of Commerce; grandchildren Keith Perkins, Jennifer Clark, Jessica Gilstrap, Graham Gilstrap, William Gilstrap, Andy Blackburn and Mandy Blackburn; and great-grandchildren Bailey and Kayleigh Perkins. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Missions Fund at Jones Memorial UMC.

Jerry Broaddus

COMMERCE — Jerry John Broaddus, 64, of Dallas died Sept. 23, 2008. A memorial service is scheduled at 4 p.m., Oct. 11, at Brean Baptist Church in Greenwood, Ind.

Born June 27, 1944, in Indianapolis, Ind., he was the son of James Hamilton and Helen Louise Burris Broaddus. He was a retired self-employed homebuilder. Mr. Broaddus served in the U.S. Marines.

Survivors are his ex wife and caregiver, Sharon Broaddus of Irving; a son, Jeffrey Broaddus of Irving; and brothers and sisters James Broaddus, Curtis Broaddus, JoAnna Grimes, Harry Broaddus, Nancy Martin, George Broaddus, Patricia Broaddus, Dorothy Small, Charles Broaddus, Pauline Jones, Fred Broaddus, Pamela Broaddus and Paul Freeburg.

His father; his mother, Helen Freeburg; and a sister, Mary Dorton preceded him in death.

Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home of Commerce is in charge of local arrangements.
