Ferle Hawkins, 93, formerly of Commerce, joined her husband, Joe Hawkins, in heaven on June 22, 2013.
They were married July 30, 1939. Mr. Hawkins preceded her in death Jan. 25, 2012.
They moved from Commerce to Sunrise Assisted Living of Plano in November 2011.
Mrs. Hawkins received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas A&M University-Commerce in the early ‘60s after raising two daughters. She was a beloved teacher at the Middle School in Commerce. She retired in 1985.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Commerce. She was a teacher in the 5-year-old department for over 60 years. She always served the 5-year-olds, being director for vacation Bible school every summer. Her daughters can recall always having their living room lined with Bible story cutouts for the felt board.
Mrs. Hawkins is survived by daughters Dian Rainbolt of Plano, Dosha King and husband Dr. Jerry King of Cedar Creek Lake, Athens, Texas. Her grandsons are Rocky Rainbolt and wife Chris of Plano and Clint King and wife Haley of San Antonio; great-grandsons Alexander Joseph Rainbolt of Lubbock and Cruz Patrick King of San Antonio. She is survived by one sister, Jean George Emerson of Dallas, and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents J.C. and Nannie Ernestine George of Campbell, son-in-law John L. Rainbolt of Greenville, three brothers and three sisters.
A graveside service was held June 25 at 11 a.m. at Memoryland Memorial Park under the direction of Coker-Mathews Funeral Home. Dr. Jerry King, son-in-law, officiated.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Commerce 5- year-old-department where Mrs. Hawkins was a teacher for many years.
