Janice Currens

DALLAS — Janice Kuykendall Currens was born June 27, 1925, in Fort Worth and passed away peacefully on March 1, 2014, in Dallas. Services were held March 5 at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home in Dallas.

Janice grew up in Dallas, and along with husband Kip, was a proud 1943 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas (simply known as “Woodrow”). A true model of the 1950’s stay-at-home mom, she raised two children and helped parent the rest of the neighborhood kids. She dutifully moved on multiple occasions due to Kip’s vocation in the small town newspaper business and always made each house a “home.” An active Christian woman, she was a founding member of the Crusader Class at the First United Methodist Church of Richardson. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Commerce prior to moving to assisted living in Dallas due to Alzheimer’s/dementia.

She was preceded in death by parents Walter E. Kuykendall and Mabel Latson Kuykendall; her husband of 51 years, Clifford “Kip” Currens; brothers W.E “Dub” Kuykendall and J.W. “Kirk” Kuykendall; and a great grandson, Kyton Rice Bowman.

Mama/Granny Janny is survived by her children, daughter Karen Rice and husband Randy of Farmersville and son Keith Currens of Ennis. Grandchildren include Melinda Kaye Rice and partner David Woodhouse of Birmingham, England, Leslie Kim Rice of Fredericksburg, Va., Shannon Rice Bowman and Ross Bowman of Glencoe, Okla., Erin Rice Lisman and Kevin Lisman of Farmersville and Cody Currens of Ennis. Great-grandchildren include Malorie Thomas, Braden McDow, Richard Burrell, Jack Burrell, Sebastian Stephens, Remy Bowman, Chase Lisman, Kyli Lisman and Regan Lisman, and great-great-grandchildren include Gage Thomas, Elyzabeth McDow and Natalie McDow.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Ark House (which provides low-cost housing for families receiving extended medical treatment at local hospitals) P.O. Box 833656, Richardson, Texas 75083-3665, and/or the Greater Dallas Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association at
