Terror shouldn’t have to unite America

COMMERCE — After the Boston Marathon bombing on April 15, many people are left asking “why?”

Why would someone do something like that to prove a point? Why would someone want to hurt another person?

For Christians, many are asking why God would allow this tragedy, which brings up the age-old question why does God allow bad things to happen?

Left alone to deal with this question, many people can go down a dark path of depression and misery.

If you are a fellow Christian and see someone struggling with this tragedy, please do not give them a cold lecture on how it was God’s judgement. If you love them, sit next to them and be there for them. Comfort them with the Bible, yes, but do not become angry with them if they do not want to talk.

Love is patient, and love is kind.

On another tangent, we as a nation have come together during this time to fight against terror in all its form. That is a good thing. But it should not take an act of terror to unite this country.

We may disagree with each other on many, many important and critical issues, but we are not barbarians, we are not animals.

As the 18th century French Philosopher Voltaire said: “I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.”

That is what is beautiful about our Constitution; anyone can believe what they want to, and are protected.

We need to follow that ideal, that even though you and I may have completely different world views, we can not only live together in one nation, but thrive together as well.
