It was apathy that killed the monkey

COMMERCE — It seems that every time a new business opens up, another one shuts down.

From College Corner Cafe, Paseanos, City Froyo, and now Kilted Monkey, Commerce is a revolving door for restaurants.

As a college student with many college friends, all I seem to hear is the constant drum beating to the sound of “There’s nothing to do in Commerce”, to which I say: “Yes, because it’s your fault for not supporting the businesses that are in town”.

Granted, some have closed because of poor management, but most have closed because, although they have tons of likes on their Facebook pages, whenever I walked through the doors there weren’t people supporting them.

This paragraph is directed mostly to the college students. You don’t get to complain about a lack of restaurants in Commerce if you don’t support the ones that are here. Just like you can’t complain about the president if you didn’t vote. I’m tired of hearing the concerns of the apathetic college student in this town.

If there’s nothing to do in Commerce, it’s because you have your eyes closed. Yes, there’s not something huge every night, but if you’ve been to the Texas A&M University-Commerce Music Department’s Facebook page recently, you’d have seen a slew of free concerts open to the public. Or stop by and watch one of the two plays in the theatre this week. Or how about this Friday, come inside the A&M-Commerce Concert Hall to watch “Believe it Anyway!”, another free event open to the public?

My point is, please don’t whine and complain about a lack of restaurants in Commerce if you’re not supporting the ones that are right next door.

P.S. Please support Luigi’s, I really love their Calzones.
