Hawkins, Brewer bring home gold from district track meet

Several Commerce Tigers placed at the District 10-3A track meet April 3 and 4 at Wildcat Stadium in Emory, although neither the boys’ or girls’ team finished in the top three.

Commerce sprinter Terrence Hawkins doubled with wins in the 100 (11.66) and 400 (52.06). The 100 was a photo finish as Richards Williams of Quinlan Ford and Tim Underwood of Community were also awarded the same time of 11.66 and fourth-place finisher Morrison from Royse City was clocked at 11.67 on the automatic timer.

Laci Brewer took first for the Lady Tigers in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.14.

Barry Askew placed second for the boys in the 200-meter dash, coming in at 23.89. Askew also had a fifth place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.77.

Brewer was also third in the long jump with a distance of 15-9 1/2. The Tiger boys 4X400-meter relay team placed third with a time of 3:35.45.

It was Brewer again as she placed fourth in the girls 100-meter dash for the Lady Tigers with a time of 13.63. Stephanie Hall also finished fourth in the girls shot put with a throw of 31-8.

The boys’ 4x100-meter relay team placed fifth with a time of 48.07. The girls’ team finished in the same place with a time of 53.81. The Lady Tigers’ Amanda Harkins was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles, coming in at 53.17.

The boys’ 4x200-meter relay team took sixth with a time of 1:38.97. The girls’ team also finished sixth in 2:02.50. The Lady Tigers’ 4x400-meter relay team came in sixth at 4:38.68.

Royse City’s Lady Bulldogs almost ran the table, capturing 14 of the 17 events to run away with the District 10-3A girls track and field title.

The Royse City Bulldogs also claimed the boys team title after winning five events.
