Hawkins barely (.01) misses state berth

By David Claybourn
Journal Sports

Only .01 of a second prevented Commerce’s Terrence Hawkins from nailing down a state berth in the 100-meter dash. Justin Crawford of Frisco Wakeland nipped Hawkins by a margin of 11.29 to 11.30 for second place. Pittsburg’s stellar quarterback Kendall Wright won the event at 11.02.

Hawkins was fifth in the 400-meter dash as Nathaniel Sowells form Dallas Madison took the event with a 48.85.

Two more Royse City athletes qualified for state on Saturday at the Region II-3A championships at Texas A&M University-Commerce’s Memorial Stadium.

The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs are sending four athletes to the University Interscholastic League state meet on May 9 in Austin, all of them in the field events.

Megan Frausto of Royse City won the girls long jump on Friday with a leap of 18 feet 8 1/2 inches.

Luke Beck from Royse City earned a trip to state with his runner-up finish in the pole vault on Friday, clearing 15-6.

On Saturday, pole vaulter Charvia Bell and high jumper Skyler Strahm also nailed down state berths with runner-up finishes in their events.

Bell cleared a personal-best 11-3 to finish second to Whitney’s Wren Bonner, who set a new regional record by clearing 12 feet.

Strahm cleared 5-4 to finish second by an inch to Van Alstyne’s Suzy Prikryl.

Frausto had also planned to defend her state title in the 400-meter dash but wound up third at the Region II-3A meet. Frausto, who was still winded from running the third leg on Royse City’s 4x200-meter relay team about five minutes earlier, missed nailing down a state berth by .07 of a second.

Prosper’s Kim Castleberry, who won the 100-meter dash title about 20 minutes earlier, powered past Frausto down the stretch to win in 57.18 seconds. Courtney Newsom of Longview Spring Hill outleaned Frausto at the finish to claim second at 58.62. Frausto was third with a 58.69.

Royse City’s 4x200 team was sixth with the time of 1:45.53. Alex Lopez-Rogina, Carmisha Harper and Raven Alexander also ran legs for Royse City.

Royse City’s Chris Smith was also fifth in the high jump (6-2).

Lopez-Rogina was sixth in the girls triple jump (34-7 1/2).

Quinlan Ford hurdler Jesse Johns was fourth in the 110-meter event (15.00).

Dillion Flowers from Community finished fifth in the 800-meter run with his 2:02.81 time.

Liberty-Eylau outpointed Prosper 72-64 to claim the girls team championship.

Atlanta won the boys team title with 100 points.
