COMMERCE — For Commerce runners looking for some extra motivation, the Morris Recreation Center will be offering training classes for the Dallas Marathon, which takes place on Dec. 8, from Aug. 14 to Dec. 8.

“The Rec Center promotes the health and wellness of the community and the university,” Jenny Speer, personal trainer/group fitness instructor and cross country athlete said. “We wanted to establish a running community here in Commerce.”

Speer is one of the coaches for the marathon training classes along with Rec Center employee Moira Johnson.

“Moira has wanted to establish a group for years now, but she didn’t have the resources to do it before,” Speer said.

The group will meet twice a week, but each runner will be given a training schedule to help them five days a week. The cost of the group is $200, which includes the $100 registration for the marathon. The Rec Center is also offering a 25 percent discount for members of the Rockwall Running Center.

“The training sessions are for casual runners who can finish several miles without a problem,” Speer said. “We will also be hosting weekly educational lectures at the Rec Center.”

The group will meet on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. Interested individuals will need to receive physician’s clearance to train, should be able to comfortably finish 4-5 miles and need to commit to five workouts a week, according to the Texas A&M University-Commerce website. Registration closes Aug. 14.

For those interested in more information, or to register for the class, contact Johnson at 903-468-3172 are at tamuc.half.training@gmail.com. An information packet should be on the A&M-Commerce website soon, according to Speer.
