CHS volleyball team remains unbeaten in district play

Lady Tigers record wins over Lone Oak, Edgewood

COMMERCE — The Commerce High School Lady Tigers defeated the Lone Oak volleyball team last Friday night 21-25, 26-24, 25-22, 25-21.

“We started otu so slow and we were making a lot of errors,” Head Coach Sarah Fielden said. “We came back quite a bit in the first game, but we just couldn’t pull it out.”

After the first set loss, the Lady Tigers rallied to win the next three sets.

“When we get going from the starting block, we are a much more aggressive team to play,” Fielden said.

With the victory the Lady Tigers move to 19-6 overall and 4-0 in district play.

The junior varsity squad also remained undefeaten in district play after defeating Lone Oak 25-11, 25-4. The freshmen had the night off.

Last Tuesday night, the Lady Tigers (20-6, 5-0) swept the Edgewood Lady Bulldogs.

“Tonight was a great match for us,” Fielden said. “The scores don’t show our depth like we would want but we had a lot of good things happening all over the floor. The girls had a meeting before the match and decided they wanted “more” than what we have been displaying on the court. They did just that.”

According to Fielden, the team was led on defense by defensive specialist Chaney Moreland and libero Laney Davidson.

“I had great decision making by my setters Chaney Moreland and Logan Talley that really helped us pull through,” she said. “Our setters really know how important their role is as pace setters and they did a great job of rallying the team’s energy. It is great to see all cylinders firing at the same time.”

The freshmen and junior varsity teams also finished the night with wins to make it an all-around sweep for the home team. Commerce will complete the first round of district play in Alba Golden on Friday. The JV will start at 4:30 p.m. followed by the varsity and the freshmen.

Commerce is currently 21 in the 2012 Texas Girls Coaches Association Volleyball Poll, released on Sept. 24.
