COMMERCE — A&M-Commerce Athletics announces the resignation of Darren Schneider as the Lions’ Director of Track and Field and Cross Country, effective Aug. 19. Schneider has accepted the position of head track and field and cross country coach at Minnesota State-Moorhead.

“I want to thank Coach Schneider for his service to A&M-Commerce and our track program, and wish he and his family the best of luck in their new adventure,” said A&M-Commerce Athletic Director Ryan Ivey.

Schneider spent four seasons as both the head cross country and men’s track and field coach in Commerce. In 2011, he guided the men’s cross country team to a third-place finish at the Lone Star Conference Championships, tying the best finish in program history. This past year, he mentored LSC Freshman of the Year Dorian McCradic while also helping Luis Romero earn All-LSC honors.

On the track, Schneider’s teams continued to improve each season at the LSC Championships, highlighted by a fifth-place finish in 2013. During his four years in Commerce, Schneider had over a dozen athletes receive All-Region recognition with three LSC Champions and a pair of NCAA qualifiers.

A nationwide search for a new head track and field and cross country coach will begin immediately.

“We are committed at continuing and enhancing our tradition of track and field excellence, and will work diligently to bring in a successful coach to lead our program,” stated Ivey.

During the search, former Lion runner and assistant coach Robert Reed will act as the interim cross country coach.

“I want to thank Robert Reed for his dedication to our cross country program, and stepping in this time of need,” mentioned Ivey.  “In addition I would like to thank Dr. Betty Block and the HHP program for allowing Coach Reed to help in this time of need.”

A&M-Commerce opens up its 2013 season at the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic in Nashville, Tenn. on Sept. 14.
