McCoy leads Lions at Dallas Baptist Fall Classic

COMMERCE — Texas A&M Unveristy-Commerce closed out the 2013 Dallas Baptist Fall Classic by shooting a 40-over 328 in round two, equaling its opening round total. But the Lions slipped four spots in the overall team standings, finishing 11th with an 80-over 656.

Opening the day tied for seventh overall, the Lions remained consistent with their 40-over 328, but lower rounds by a handful of schools dropped A&M-Commerce down in the standings. The Lions finished two shots back of both Angelo State and Arkansas-Fort Smith (78-over 654), just missing out on another top-10 finish. A&M-Commerce was four strokes back of eighth-place St. Mary’s (76-over 652) while holding off 12th-place Northwood (81-over 657) by one shot.

Individually, senior Chelsea McCoy recorded a top-20 finish, posting a 12-over 156, including an 8-over 80 on the day, tying for 16th overall. It is the second top-20 finish of the season for McCoy and the 10th of her A&M-Commerce career, as she outlasted fellow senior Chantry McMahan by three shots following McMahan’s 15-over 159, tying for 27th overall.

Senior Haley Green made the biggest improvement on the day for A&M-Commerce, shaving nine strokes off her first round 90 to card a 9-over 81, finishing tied for 59th overall with a 27-over 171. Sophomore Ali Leasor and freshman Zoey Daneshfar rounded out the Lion scorecard, posting a 30-over 174 and a 32-over 176, respectively, while freshman Emily Taylor carded a 37-over 181 competing as an individual.

St. Edward’s captured the 2013 Dallas Baptist Fall Classic team title, shooting a 24-over 600 and defeating second-place Tarleton State (32-over 608) by eight shots. Arkansas Tech (33-over 609) finished third with Midwestern State (38-over 614) and the host Patriots (47-over 623) rounding out the top-five.

A&M-Commerce has one tournament remaining in the fall season, returning to the course next week in Lawton, Oklahoma, for the Oklahoma Invitational. Hosted by Cameron, the 36-hole tournament gets underway Monday, Oct. 21st before wrapping up on Tuesday, Oct. 22nd.
