Women place 10th at golf regional tournament

COMMERCE — Texas A&M University-Commerce had a pair of players finish among the top-20 of the individual standings as the Lions placed 10th out of 18 teams at the Midwestern State Mustang Invitational.

A&M-Commerce posted a 42-over 330-over the final 18 holes, logging an 81-over 657 for the tournament.

It was another successful showing for a pair of Lion golfers as Sara Diaz and Chantry McMahan each finished among the top-20 of the individual standings. Diaz, the reigning Lone Star Conference Golfer of the Week, finished with a 15-over 159 to tie for 13th overall — her third-straight tournament with a top-15 finish. McMahan carded a 17-over 161, good enough to tie for 18th and log her fourth top-20 finish of the season.

Chelsea McCoy was the third Lion on the scorecard, posting a 22-over 166 and tying for 41st overall. Haley Green (27-over 171) and Ali Leasor (39-over 183) rounded out the A&M-Commerce competitors while Holly Jenkins notched a 32-over 176 competing as an individual.

A&M-Commerce began the day in seventh place, but added three strokes to its opening round 327, carding a 42-over 330 and slipping back to 10th in the team standings. The Lions finished four shots back of ninth-place Southwestern Oklahoma State (77-over 653), while besting 11th-place Arkansas-Fort Smith (84-over 660) by three shots to record their sixth top-10 finish of the season.

Host Midwestern State captured the team title with a 47-over 623, besting Central Oklahoma (56-over 632) by nine shots. Oklahoma Christian (59-over 635) placed third while Lone Star Conference rival Incarnate Word and Newman (67-over 643) tied for fourth.

A&M-Commerce will have two weeks off now before returning to action with a short trip down to the Metroplex. The Lions’ next tournament is the Dallas Baptist Spring Invitational on April 1st and 2nd, with full results posted as they become available at
