A&M-Commerce men fall 92-84

ALLEN — In a familiar tune, Texas A&M University-Commerce lost in its third straight post-season appearance against Midwestern State University, 92-84 on Wednesday night.

Quince Jackson had three personal fouls in the first half, and A&M-Commerce had 10 team fouls in the first 15 minutes of play in the Lone Star Conference tournament quarterfinal.

Devondrick Walker drew a foul and hit two free throws that brought A&M Commerce the lead early on. Preston Whitley quickly followed Walker with a 3-pointer to increase the lead to 33-29 with six minutes remaining in the half.

Midwestern State player Chris Buttermore fired right back with a three to tie the game at 41, and Midwestern scored four more unanswered points in under one minute to take the lead at 45-41 at the half.

The Lions led the first half in rebounds, with a total of 23 rebounds, nine of those on the offense.

Midwestern State took a double-digit lead in the first five minutes of the second half and didn’t look back, leading by as much as 20 points before the end.

In his last game as a Lion, Andrew Davis had a double-double, scoring 18 and 12 rebounds.

Whitley led the 14-15 Lions with 19 points. Walker and Stefon Carson both chipped in 13 points.

Kevin Grayer scored a career-high 33 points to lead the Mustangs, who are now 20-7. Derek Kaster fired in a career-high 18 points, while Keith Spillman added 14.

Midwestern State advances to Friday’s semifinals against the winner of today’s game between Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-Kingsville.
