Jenna DeLong named A&M-Commerce assistant softball coach

COMMERCE — A&M-Commerce head softball coach Richie Bruister today announced the hiring of Jenna DeLong as the Lions’ assistant coach. DeLong will oversee the A&M-Commerce pitching staff as well as coordinating recruiting for the Lions.

“I am extremely excited to add Jenna to my staff as she came highly recommended from several well respected coaches,” Bruister said. “Jenna is one of the up-and-coming young coaches who has a very bright future. She is a proven winner not only in the U.S. but internationally as well. Her energy, contagious excitement and passion she brings to our program is something I look forward too and our future players will be fired up to be able to say she is our coach.”

DeLong spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at UT-Dallas where she helped guide the Comets to a pair of winning seasons. In 2012, the squad finished 24-14 with a 0.85 earned run average, recording 20-wins for the first time since 2006 while notching the highest winning percentage in program history. That was followed by a 23-18-1 mark in 2013 as the Comets qualified for the American Southwest Conference tournament for the first time since 2005.

DeLong was a standout pitcher at Drake University where she was a four-year starter for the Bulldogs. A three-time first team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection, she was named the MVC’s Pitcher of the Year as a senior after posting a 21-8 record with a 1.89 earned run average and 228 strikeouts. DeLong also contributed offensively with 10 home runs in her senior season, earning second team National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) all-region honors.

DeLong left her mark on the Drake record books, ranking first all-time in Bulldog history in career strikeouts (760), second in career victories (64) and third in both career shutouts (19) and innings pitched (683.1). She also holds three of the top-five single-season strikeout totals, including a program-best 244 in 2009, while her 21 wins as a senior is second all-time in Drake history.

Her accomplishments were not limited solely to the diamond as DeLong excelled in the classroom as well. She was a three-time first team MVC Scholar-Athlete selection and was a two-time NFCA All-American Academic Award honoree. DeLong graduated cum laude from Drake in 2011, earning her bachelor’s degrees in both english and journalism.

Following graduation, DeLong spent a season playing professionally in the Netherlands where she guided the Tex Town Tigers to the European Cup Championship, earning MVP honors. She also served as the franchise’s head coach and pitching coach of its second team while assuming the role of pitching coach for TTT’s national championship junior team.

A native of Couer d’Alene, Idaho, DeLong was a standout prep athlete, guiding the Vikings to back-to-back 5A state championships. She was tabbed as the Inland Empire League MVP, garnering Female Athlete of the Year honors from the Idaho Spokesman-Review.
