COMMERCE — Texas A&M University-Commerce senior linebacker Danny Mason has been named the Lone Star Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week, announced today by conference officials. West Texas A&M running back Khiry Robinson was named the Offensive POW with Midwestern State kicker Greg Saladino picking up Special Teams POW honors.

Mason was crucial to the Lions’ 21-14 overtime victory against A&M-Kingsville Saturday night, recording 13 tackles, including five solo. Mason also had a pass break-up as the Javelinas were driving deep in Lion territory, and helped seal the overtime victory for A&M-Commerce, recording a sack on Javelina quarterback Bryan Ehrlich on A&M-Kingsville’s first play of overtime. The defensive team captain, Mason’s play helped the Lions to their first Chennault Cup victory since 2001 and their first win over a team from the state of Texas since 2008.

On the season, Mason has notched 45 tackles and currently leads the Lone Star Conference in tackles per game at 11.25. The senior from Louisville, Ky. also ranks 12th nationally in tackles per game, and has been an emotional captain all season. Through the first four games of 2012, Mason also has compiled 19 solo stops, four tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks along with a pair of pass breakups.

Mason and the rest of the Lions make a return trip to San Antonio this weekend, facing Incarnate Word Saturday evening at Benson Stadium. The Lions are 0-2 all-time against the Cardinals with both games decided by a single point (17-16 in 2010, 23-22 in 2011). Opening kick is set for 7 p.m.
