Cameron squeaks by A&M-Commerce men Saturday

COMMERCE — A strong surge midway through the second half proved too great an obstacle to overcome as A&M-Commerce dropped a hard-fought 69-63 decision to Cameron Saturday afternoon at the Field House.

The Lions fall to 14-12 overall and 7-9 in the Lone Star Conference standings, moving into a three-way tie for sixth with West Texas A&M and Texas A&M-Kingsville. Cameron clinches the second overall seed in the LSC tournament, closing out the regular season with a 17-7 mark and a 13-5 in conference action.

Once again, A&M-Commerce struggled from the floor, hitting just 18 of its 59 attempts (30.5 percent) while going just 3-for-18 from beyond the arc (16.7 percent). Cameron was 18-of-57 from the floor (31.6 percent) but hit five more three-point shots than the Lions (8-of-29), helping give the Aggies the distance they needed.

Four Lions finished in double figures, led by a double-double from Andrew Davis who notched 11 points and a career-best 14 rebounds on the night. It marks the fourth double-double of the season for Davis, who earlier this week was named a first team Capital One Academic All-American.

After clinching a spot in the LSC tournament earlier this week, the Lions were looking to make a statement and climb up the standings by knocking off the second-place Aggies to open up a season-ending two-game homestand. A&M-Commerce looked strong early, building a six-point lead at 16-10 midway through the opening stanza.

But Cameron began to find its shooting groove, stringing together a 14-5 run to take a 24-19 lead with just under four minutes remaining in the half. That was answered by an 8-0 run by the Lions, however, giving A&M-Commerce the edge at 27-24 before taking a 28-27 advantage into the locker room.

After exchanging baskets through the first part of the second half, Cameron began to find its rhythm and distance itself from the Lions. A three-minute stretch saw the Aggies build a 14 point lead at 57-43 with eight minutes remaining, then the late A&M-Commerce rally wasn’t enough as Cameron held on to prevail 69-63, sweeping the season series against the Lions.
