Commerce Tiger Sharks compete at regional, state meets

COMMERCE — The Commerce Tiger Sharks swim team of the Texas Amateur Athletic League trained hard throughout the summer and two swimmers competed at the Games of Texas Swimming Championship this last weekend.

The 40 member team, sponsered by the Commerce Parks and Recreation Department, was coached by Victoria Walters.

“We held practices twice a day, four days a week, starting June 4,” she said. “All of our swimmers improved on their times during the summer.”

The team competed in meets every weekend, culminating in the A and B Regional Events. Because of their performaces during the A Regionals, Ty Connally and John-David James qualified for the state championships. Connally finished 19 out of 40 swimmers in the 50 Freestyle and 25 in the 25 Freestyle. James finished 20 and 22 in the 50 and 25 Freestyle, respectively.

“Even though it’s an individual sport, we were very much a team,” Walters said. “Everyone roots for everyone else during the race, and the parents in the stands cheered for all of the kids, even if their child wasn’t in that particular race.”

Trenton Connally, Ty Connally , Suzi Davis, William Dudenhoeffer, Rodney Hawkins, Emma Isom, John-David James, Jeremiah James, Timothy Norman, Anthony Peak, Ben Peak, Zoe Peak, Darien Redd and Rockney Reid all competed at the A Regionals held on July 14 in The Colony. Ben Peak placed first in the men’s 100 yard freestyle a 50 yard freestyle events. Connally, James, and Zoe Peak also had top 10 finishes in their events

Maria House, Caitlyn Scott, Katie Peak, Benton White, Braden Wood and Rockney Reid competed in the B Regionals held on July 21 in The Colony. Reid placed first in the boy’s 50 yard freestyle and second in the boys 25 yard butterfly. White, Katie Peak, Braden Wood and Maria House all had top 10 finishes in their respective races.
