Childress leads Lions at Mustang Invitational

COMMERCE — Texas A&M University-Commerce shaved a pair of strokes off their second round total, posting a 27-over 315 to move up into sole possession of 10th-place at the Midwestern State Mustang Invitational.

The Lions closed out the 54-hole tournament with an 80-over 944, logging its sixth top-10 finish of the season.

For the second-straight tournament, freshman Kason Childress was the top A&M-Commerce finisher, logging a 5-over 77 in round three to close out the tournament with a 15-over 231, tying for 24th in the individual standings.

He beat out junior C.J. Clem, who logged the Lions’ best round of the day with a 3-over 75 and tied for 29th overall with a 16-over 232.

Sophomore Marcus Sanna was the third A&M-Commerce finisher, logging a 9-over 81 to close out the tournament with a 26-over 242. Cade Grimm and Seth Maxwell each carded a 29-over 245 while senior Jarret Martin posted an 18-over 234 competing as an individual.

Beginning the day tied for 11th in the team standings, A&M-Commerce was able to make its move, pulling past West Texas A&M and Pittsburg State and settling into sole possession of 10th-place.

The Lions finished three shots better than the Buffs (83-over 947) and five strokes ahead of 12th-place Arkansas Tech (85-over 949), distancing themselves in front of a five-team logjam.

Host Midwestern State used a final round charge, shooting a 3-under 285 to card a 23-over 887 for the tournament, defeating Lone Star Conference rival Cameron (27-over 891) by four shots.
