Back, Henderson named to all-region squad

COMMERCE — A&M-Commerce landed a pair on the Daktronics South Central All-Region team as defender Vicky Back and forward Savannah Henderson were both named second team honorees, announced earlier this week. It is the first all-region honor for both players as the duo played a key role in helping the Lions to a memorable 2013 season.

Back was named a first team All-Lone Star Conference selection after anchoring the Lion defensive unit which allowed less than a goal per game. Primarily focusing on the opposition’s top scorer, Back also contributed offensively by adding four goals and a pair of assists (10 points), recording the game-winner in the Lions’ victory over Oklahoma Christian. A native of York, England, Back was named the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week on October 8th.

Henderson pulled in a pair of postseason honors, being named the LSC’s Freshman of the Year while also joining Back as a first team All-LSC selection. The Mabank native led the Lions in every statistical category, ranking first in the LSC in shots (74), shots per game (3.89), assists (7) and assists per game (.368) while sitting fourth in goals (7), goals per game (.368) and game-winning goals (3). She was the LSC’s Offensive Player of the Week on October 1st and helped pace the Lions to an NCAA appearance for the first time since 2008.

Back and Henderson become the first Lions to be named a Daktronics all-region selection since Brionna Minde was a second team selection in 2011 as A&M-Commerce has now had 31 players receive All-Region honors under head coach Neil Piper. The Lone Star Conference was well represented in the South Central Region with three players named to the first team and an additional seven tabbed second team honorees.

It wraps up a memorable season for A&M-Commerce as the Lions went from 5-12 in 2012 to 11-6-2 in 2013. A&M-Commerce finished third in the Lone Star Conference standings, falling on penalty kicks in the conference semifinals before being selected for the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2008.
